Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What are the different parts of distribution networks?

A1: Distribution networks take up the Distribution of electric power. Distribution networks consist of following parts:

  1. Distribution substation
  2. Primary distribution feeder
  3. Distribution Transformer
  4. Distributors
  5. Service mains

Q2: What are the factors electrical power distribution depends upon?

A2: Electrical power distribution system depends upon the following factors.

  1. System’s Maximum Demand: If the system’s maximum is more, then more numbers of feeders feed the ring.
  2. Ring main distributor’s Total Length: To compensate the voltage drop in the lone, if the length is more, more feeders to be connected to the ring system.
  3. Required Regulation of voltage: The number of feeders connected to the ring depends upon the permissible allowable voltage drop of the line.

Q3: What is a feeder, distributor and service maim?

A3: A conductor which connects the localized generation station or substation to the area where power needs to be distributed is called feeder.

A conductor through which tappings are taken for the supply to the customers or consumers is called A distributor. The tappings are taken along its length at various places. Hence the current through a distributor is not constant.

A small cable that connects the distributor to the consumers’ terminals is called a service maim.

Q4: What are the factors that are considered in the design of a distribution system?

A4: A distribution system must satisfy and meet customer’s needs from smallest to largest. To achieve this agenda, requirements of electricity users must be anticipated. Factors that are considered in the design of a distribution system include the following:

  • Type of structure depends on the usages required by the customer and type of utilization equipment.
  • Current utilization and future needs
  • Structure’s projected life
  • Structure’s flexibility
  • Different requirements of the load which includes maximum demand and time intervals for maximum demand.
  • Location of load equipment service entrance
  • Distribution equipment, Switchgear and panels
  • Type of installation methods that are used in the design
