World Test Championship 2025: Reviving Test Cricket’s Glory
Once considered a fading format, Test cricket has rediscovered its significance, largely due to the introduction of the World Test Championship (WTC). This tournament spans two years, culminating in the top two teams battling for the highest honor in Test cricket. India, having showcased remarkable consistency, reached the finals in both previous editions. However, they fell short on both occasions, losing to New Zealand in 2021 and Australia in 2023. Despite these setbacks, India remains a strong contender to make it to the 2025 final.
Nathan Lyon Backs Rohit Sharma: Calls for Change in WTC Final Format
After India’s defeat to Australia in the 2023 WTC Final, Indian captain Rohit Sharma suggested that the WTC final should be a three-match series to give teams a better chance to build momentum. Australian spinner Nathan Lyon, who has over 500 Test wickets, has now voiced his support for this idea. He believes that a single Test match can be decided in just one bad session, and a three-match series would allow teams the opportunity to recover and demonstrate their superiority over a longer contest.
Lyon explained:
“I’d like to see the World Test Championship Final played as a three-match series. You can lose a Test match in one bad session, but with three games, teams can bounce back and potentially show their dominance by winning the series 3-0.”
India and Australia Set for Another Border-Gavaskar Trophy Showdown
India and Australia, currently the top two teams in the ongoing WTC cycle, are set to face off once again in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy later this year. This highly anticipated five-match Test series will take place in Australia, with India looking to defend the title they won in the previous edition of the series.
