Putting up a brave fight against USA in their Group A opener in the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017. The Indian U-17 National Team coach Luis Norton de Matos asserted his side is ready to take on Colombia.
India suffered a heartbreaking loss to Colombia in their Group A contest of the FIFA U-17 World Cup. Juan Penaloza opened the scoring for Colombia when his brilliant strike went into the net in the 49th minute. Jeakson Thounaojam’s header equalised for the hosts in the 82nd minute but the celebrations did not even last a minute as Penaloza’s second goal sealed the game for Colombia. India had also lost their opening game 0-3 to the United States of America on October 6.
The South Americans eventually emerged victors with Juan Penaloza (49th and 83rd) scoring twice at the Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium. Defensive midfielder Jeakson Singh had neutralised Colombia’s lead by scoring the country’s first-ever World Cup goal in the 82nd minute.
Coach Luis Norton de Matos can take pride in his team as it trooped out to a standing ovation from the crowd amidst chants of “India, India”.
Colombia adopted desperate measures, explored through counters but this was a motivated Indian combination that stood up bravely.
To Indian supporters the goal may have appeared against the run of play, but Colombia had waited and planned the execution.
A chance to equalise went abegging in the 75th minute when substitute Naoram shot into the goalkeeper from handshaking distance.
