The 30-year old Russian Tennis player, Maria Sharapova, makes an impressive return at the US Open. Former world #1 received a 15-month doping ban. Furthermore, she defeated the currently ranked #2, Simona Halep, in the ongoing US Open. Her scores against Simona Halep read 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Thus, she made a victorious return to the Grand Slam competition. Also, Maria Sharapova is a former five-time grand slam champion.
Due to a forearm injury, Maria Sharapova could only manage one hardcourt tune-up. She and Halep gave the audience a thriller match where Maria Sharapova clinched a victory in the last set.
Maria Sharapova said:
“I just thought this was another day, another opportunity, another match but this was so much more.”
“You sometimes wonder why you put in all the work and this is exactly why.”

With this win against Halep, Sharapova extends her undefeated run against Simona Halep and makes it 7-0. After scoring the match point, Maria shed some tears and thanked the fans who were on the edge of their seats throughout the match. She said:
“You never know what you’re going to feel until you win that match point. It was so worth it.”
Before this, she last played the Grand Slam match in the Quarter Final against Serena Williams in the Australian Open which took place last year. With this, she advanced to the next round where, for the first time, she will face the Hungarian, Timea Babos.
