People of India celebrate the National Sports Day remembering Major Dhyan Chand. Known as ‘The Wizard,’ Major Dhyan Chand was born on August 29, 1905. Because of his immense talent in Hockey, he earned the name of The Wizard. The Indian government, keeping his Hockey skills in mind, decided to celebrate the Nationals Sports Day on his birthday. Therefore, in 2012, the Indian government announced August 29 as National Sports Day.
Dhyan Chand made the nation proud by winning Gold Medals in Olympics in 1928, 1932 and 1936. In his career which lasted over 22 years, he scored over 400 goals. Also, in 1936 Final in Berlin, India comprehensively defeated Germany 8-1 because of Dhyan Chand’s three goals. It was after that match when India became invincible in the world of Hockey. Furthermore, after he retired, he joined National Institute of Sports in Patiala as Hockey Coach Chief.

In 2002, National Hockey stadium in Delhi got renamed after him. At just 16 years, he joined the army to serve his nation. He retired in the year 1956 and earned himself a title of Major. In the year 1952, his autobiography named ‘Goal’ was published which earned huge success. Major Dhyan Chand passed away on December 3, 1979.
India’s PM, Narendra Modi, on Major Dhyan Chand, said:
“The country celebrates National Sports Day on the 29th of August. This is the birth anniversary of the great hockey player, hockey wizard, Major Dhyan Chand Ji. His contribution to hockey was unparalleled. I am reminding you of this because I want the younger generation of our country to take part in sports.”
Furthermore, he added:
“Sports should become a part of our lives. If we are a young nation, our youth should get manifested in the field of sports as well. Sports means physical fitness, mental alertness, and personality enhancement. What else does one need? Sports, in a way, is a recipe that brings people together.”
