Before getting into the Search Engine Working process, we need to know about a few basic things Crawler/Spider/Robots and Indexing in terms of SEO.

Crawler/Spider/Robots:

For every search engine will have Spider/Crawler/Robots. The crawler also called as Spider or Robots. Robots/Crawlers/Spiders will crawl the website, gather the information present on the websites and saves in information in the Search Engine server database.

Index:

Adding a web page to the search engine database to list our webpage in the SERP(Search Engine Results Page) is called Index.

How Search Engine Works Step by Step:

All search engines work using a 3 phase approach to managing, ranking and returning search results. But a lot of them don’t have an idea what is happening behind that search engine box when they type in their search queries. So how do Google, Bing and the rest of them work out what is on the web, what is relevant to your general question?

There are three working functions which are done by the search engines:

  1. Web Crawling
  2. Indexing
  3. Ranking
  • Web Crawling

Web crawlers will find out what is published out on the World Wide Web. Starts crawling and makes a copy of what is on web pages. After a certain period again the crawler will visit the same webpage to checks the multitude of pages to see if they are changed and make a copy of any changes found. The web crawlers do this process.

  • Indexing

Once a “spider” or “crawler” has crawled a web page, they make a copy of the webpage and returns it to the search engine. Webpage copy will be stored in the search engine server database. Search engine servers are enormous which act as a repository of the all the copies of web pages is made by the crawlers.

The repository of web pages stored in the Search engine database is referred to as the ‘Index.’ Saved indexed data is used to provide the search results you see on the search engine. Indexing is the process of organizing the masses of data and pages in Search Engine Database. So, when a user searches for a query, relevant results are shown to search query because of the indexing process.

  • Ranking

Finally, we have a vast collection of web page copies which are being constantly updated and organized in the Search Engine Database. Now a website or a web page can be ranked in the SERPs in order of relevance to your search term – this is where the Algorithm comes into play to give the ranking to the indexed websites.

The algorithm is a very complex and lengthy equation which calculates a value/rank of a website for any given site in relation to a search term.  So, based on Search Engine Algorithm rules & factors a website get a position(It may be the first/last position) in SERP.

We don’t know what the algorithm is, because search engines tend to keep this a closely guarded secret from competitors and also from people looking to game the search engine to get to the top spots.
