Specifications

While the 2017 iteration of the Nokia 6 was a fairly accomplished smartphone in its own right, it was let down massively by its under-powered Snapdragon 430 processor. This time around HMD Global has equipped the Nokia 6 (2018) with a much more powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 chipset clocked at 2.2 GHz.

This is the same chipset found in upper mid-range smartphones such as the Moto X4. The 14nm Snapdragon 630 processor consists of four high-performance ARM Cortex A53 cores clocked at 2.2GHz paired with four ARM Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.8GHz for low-intensity workloads. In addition, the Nokia 6 (2018) comes with 4GB LPDDR4 RAM, 32/64GB of internal storage expandable via a microSD card (of up to 128GB) and 3,000mAh battery with fast charging support. HMD Global claims the smartphone can attain a 50 percent charge in just 30 minutes.

Software: Pure, untouched Android

Just like the rest of Nokia’s Android smartphone line-up, the Nokia 6 (2018) runs on a pure and untouched version of Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box devoid of unneeded gimmicks and overlays. HMD Global has promised that the smartphone will be updated to Android 8.0 Oreo in the near future.

Design, display: 16:9 again sadly

Just like the previous Nokia 6, the Nokia 6 (2018) is machined from series 6000 aluminum and looks premium and classy. HMD Global claims that every Nokia 6 (2018) goes through a two-color anodization process. We called the previous iteration of the Nokia 6 the best-looking smartphone under Rs 15,000 and the 2018 version looks set to carry forward that title.

HMD Global also claims that the Nokia 6 (2018) is more compact than its predecessor with a higher screen to body ratio.

The fact that HMD Global has equipped the Nokia 6 (2018) with a bog standard 16:9 display in a day and age of edge-to-edge 18:9 panels is slightly disappointing. The display itself is more or less unchanged from last year  – it is a 5.5-inch FullHD panel with 2.5D Gorilla Glass 3 on top for protection against nicks and scratches.

Connectivity: Ticking all the right boxes

While the 2017 Nokia 6 made do with a dated micro USB port, the 2018 refresh comes with a much more future-forward USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer. In addition, the smartphone retains the 3.5mm headphone jack which is fast becoming extinct in smartphones these days and supports 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS/A-GPS, Apt-X, and GLONASS.

Cameras: Same old, same old

The Nokia 6 (2018) comes with more or less the same cameras found on its predecessor. At the back, there is a 16MP camera with phase detection autofocus, an aperture of f/2.0 and a dual-LED flash. There is an 8MP sensor on the front with an 84-degree wide-angle lens and an aperture of f/2.0. The biggest addition is dual-sight capture which we will talk about later on in the article.
