Soft Reset (Restart)
A soft reset, or simply restarting your iPhone, can help resolve minor issues without erasing any data.
- Press and Hold the Power and Volume Buttons:
- Press and hold the Side button (Power button) and either the Volume Up or Volume Down button simultaneously.
- Slide to Power Off:
- When the power-off slider appears, swipe it to the right to turn off your iPhone.
- Wait and Turn On:
- Wait about 30 seconds for the device to completely power off. Press and hold the Side button again until you see the Apple logo to turn it back on.
Factory Reset (Erase All Content and Settings)
A factory reset will erase all data from your iPhone and return it to its original settings. This is useful for troubleshooting severe issues or preparing the device for a new user.
- Backup Your Data:
- Before performing a factory reset, ensure you have backed up your data to iCloud or a computer. Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup and select Back Up Now.
- Open Settings:
- Go to Settings on your iPhone.
- Navigate to Reset Options:
- Tap General and scroll down to Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Erase All Content and Settings:
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings. You may be prompted to enter your passcode or Apple ID password.
- Confirm the Reset:
- Follow the on-screen instructions to confirm the reset. Your iPhone will restart and begin erasing all data.
- Setup Your iPhone:
- Once the reset is complete, your iPhone will restart to the setup screen. Follow the prompts to set up your device as new or restore from a backup.
Reset Specific Settings
If you only need to reset certain settings without erasing all content, you can do so through the settings menu.
- Open Settings:
- Go to Settings on your iPhone.
- Navigate to Reset Options:
- Tap General and then Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Choose the Desired Reset Option:
- Reset All Settings: Resets all system settings to default but does not erase your data. Tap Reset All Settings.

- Reset Keyboard Dictionary: Deletes any custom words or phrases added to the keyboard dictionary. Tap Reset Keyboard Dictionary.
- Reset Home Screen Layout: Returns your home screen layout to the default arrangement. Tap Reset Home Screen Layout.
- Reset Location & Privacy: Resets your location and privacy settings to their defaults. Tap Reset Location & Privacy.
- Confirm the Reset:
- Enter your passcode if prompted and confirm the reset.
